Completely Ready For Spring
**I seem to spend a great deal of time on Facebook arguing with the right. It makes me tired. Especially when I post a link explaining why I am boycotting Chik-Fil-A and a friend from high school starts posting links to their Valentine's Party.**
**My instructor for my Biology Lab opened up all of the quizzes for the rest of the term, so I have finished that class already. I managed an A by the hair of my chinny chin chin.**
**I have a healthy A in my Administrative Law class. I am Facebook friends with one of the women in the class. We had another class together, back in the fall, and we really hit it off. She seems to spend a lot more time than I do on her homework and projects. Don't get me wrong, the class is A LOT of work, but I have never taken 6 hours on a quiz. I am not positive that I spent a full 6 hours on the (take home) mid-term, although DSD did pull me off the computer 2 nights during the week before the Super Bowl and said, "GO TO BED." Does that make me smarter than she is? Just able to grasp it easier? I don't know. She seems very intelligent. I wonder about these things.**
**I am doing a lot more cooking at home using fresh (well, store bought) ingredients and I can tell a difference in the food. There is a new Farmer's Market here locally and I think I am going to head up there next Saturday.**
**I hope that my garden does better this year. I have everything planned beautifully, from the time to start plants from seed, to when to transplant them, and which ones to start in the ground. Unfortunately, those tomatoes & peppers I started last month didn't do anything. Why? Well, we turn the heat down at night & 60 is a bit too chilly, especially for peppers. Who knew? The onions are not a healthy bunch either. But the peas and the spinach I started in the raised bed two weeks ago are just peeping their little green heads up this afternoon. I almost peed my pants I was so thrilled!**
**I heard my state Representative Marti Coley saying that the Education Committee was not happy with Governor Scott's budget recommendations and that they would have some budget suggestions of their own. (Scott is SLASHING education, prison, and police budgets to name a few while cutting property taxes and corporate taxes). I agreed with her and called her office to tell her staff that. I thought the young man I spoke with was going to cry. "Really? You called to say you were happy with the Representative?" It was funny and sad. If your Senator or Representative has done something you agree with, TELL them.**
**I also called my Senator Bill Nelson to tell him I was NOT impressed with budget coming out of the House and that I did NOT want the budget to public broadcasting cut. And I volunteered to help out on his re-election campaign next year. The people who are going to run against him are as right wing as they come.**
**There is probably more, but it is time to start the potatoes, make the salad, and then work on the pork loin. I don't know this Betty Crocker me has come from, but I am loving it!**
Y'all be safe out there and keep up the great work!

Are You Spreading Love or Hate?
But several weeks ago, my ex-husband's new wife (who is a Facebook friend, and someone I normally enjoy IRL) posted a link to a free book written by Dr. James Dobson. It was titled, "Daddys and Daughters" and she is ordering this for her little girls, or maybe for their father, and, trust me, he could use the help with his parenting skills. I mentioned that I was pretty certain that Dr. Dobson spreads hatred about homosexuals and that he was the one who want after that poor Teletubby (I was wrong, it was Spongebob he didn't like), and that I was not certain that she wanted that sort of information around her girls. (BabyBoy's 2nd little sister was born Thanksgiving weekend, so there is now a 3 year old and a 2 month old).
The conversation did not go well from there. She asked for proof, I provided links. A friend of hers told me that I didn't know what I was talking about, and she (BabyBoy's step mother) explained that she had been raised reading Dr. Dobson, and that he didn't HATE gays, he LOVES everyone, he just believes that homosexuality is a sin. Then came the $64,000 question, "I believe that homosexuality is a sin," she typed, "do you believe that I am spreading hate?"
I admit it. I chickened out and just didn't answer her.
Because yes, telling others, especially young children, that homosexuality is a sin IS SPREADING HATE. While the Bible tells us that we should hate the sin, but love the sinner, most of us are a little too human for that. So being told that a person's lifestyle (one that I believe is NOT CHOSEN) is something that God disagrees with gives others the right to disagree with it. Being told that homosexuals are going to hell is spreading hate. And if the person that you are explaining all of this to just happens to realize that she is gay one day, now you have spread fear.
I don't believe there is a parent in any land who has a child and looks down into its sleeping face and prays that that child will be gay. I would almost bet that homosexuals do not pray that their children will be gay. It is a difficult life fraught with uncertainty, and, sadly, at times danger.
We have come a long way in this country toward accepting homosexuality as normal, but not far enough. And will never be truly equal, or truly free, if people continue to raise their children to hate and the hatred is continuously being spread.
Even if that hatred is as innocuous as labeling a person's lifestyle as a sin.

An Analysis of Jon Stewart's Rally Speech
A Brief Hello!
On top of that, apparently Penn State wanted to lose the Outback Bowl more than the Gators did, so Coach Meyer finished his time with the Gator Nation on a high note!
I am STILL working on the post about DC and the blogger meet-up. It will happen.
But someone (I don't remember who) asked me to post the analysis I did of Jon Stewart's Rally Speech. The analysis was for my speech class and (reading back over it) I think (with a great deal of false modesty) I did a pretty good job.
That will be the next post.
I would like to post about the upcoming end of the world also, but maybe someone already has?
Happy 2011 To Each and Every One of You!

Getting There and Thankful For It
So, finish the speech and the Powerpoint, write one paper about a speech given by someone else (imagine, I chose Jon Stewart's end of Rally speech) and take two final exams. Hooray! I am ready.
Our Thanksgiving was fun. DSD's oldest boy decided he wasn't coming for dinner if he couldn't bring his dog... who has never met any of us OR Lola. It would have been a nightmare. He wasn't missed. A friend who normally comes brought her mother and her mother's boyfriend. SleepyEd is our nickname for him. They arrived at 2 and he had to be awakened for dinner... at 3. Then he was in the kitchen with BabyBoy demanding dessert before most of us were done with dinner. No offers to help with the cooking or the cleanup. He then proceeded to go BACK to sleep until time to go. WOW!
There was a slight discussion on taxes and how unfair it is to raise taxes on the rich, but it was held outside of my hearing, because they were afraid they weren't going to get dinner if I overheard probably.
Still in a funk, but I am blaming it on hormones and exhaustion (and the exhaustion can be partially blamed on the hormones and the fact that I am not sleeping).
So for the rest of you in a funk. Read this. It is a really beautiful story. It may not help your funk, but it may give you a nice happy tears cry.
AND, I just received an Email from the NewYorkTimes saying that the Senate passed a bill on food safety. 75-25. Huh. Bi-partisan? Must be something wrong.

My First Speech ***UPDATED*** Now includes a picture of the doll

First speeches were due last Wednesday (9/8) and I went first because I was so nervous. Let me talk about politics or football, but an "artifact speech" dealing with something that can represent ME? Scary.
This is the speech I gave.
"Poor is a relative term. Growing up, I didn’t know that we were poor. We had a nice house. We got new shoes and new clothes every year before school started, and we always received nice things at Christmas. Most of the time that included more new clothes, but there were toys and bikes also. We also took a vacation every year from the time I was 6 until after I graduated from high school. The vacation was always to visit my dad’s family in northern Indiana, but, stopping at Opryland or the Caverns in Kentucky, we managed to have a day or two of fun also. I didn’t know that sometimes my mother stayed awake all night wondering where the money was going to come from to feed us and pay the bills, or how every single year we came close to losing the house because my parents always paid the taxes late.
But if poor is a relative term and we were considered poor, then there must be another term to use for the abject poverty my mother grew up in. There were no new clothes. There were no shoes. Not only did her family not have vacations or toys, but they didn’t have running water or indoor plumbing or toilet paper. She played with glass coke bottles as a child, holding them like baby dolls, pretending to feed them and change their diapers as she saw her sisters do with her younger brothers — and then with their own children, as they married young to escape.
On May 2, 1959, my mother’s 12th birthday, she received a real doll — a beautiful, porcelain doll that had turned 50 the previous year. This was a gift from her great-grandmother, because they shared the middle name, Lee. My mother carried that doll everywhere for the next 34 years. She moved to New Jersey in high school to live with one of her sisters. She met and married my father, had me and my brother, and moved from pillar to post and back again. When I was young, the doll lived in a shoe box in the linen closet wrapped in a dingy brown cloth where she wore an equally dingy brown dress,. Sometimes I asked my mom if I could look at the doll, sometimes I just looked at her when my mother was not home, but I was always careful, almost reverent when I took her from her box. Through the years this doll began to symbolize my mother to me— her strength, her beauty, her ability to withstand the years and live in conditions that were not the best in the world, but still to endure. To grow. To prosper.
As I got older— after we all managed to survive my teen years— my mother endured my marriage to a man she never liked or approved of, the birth of my only child, the sale of our family home, and a diagnosis of darkness in the not too distant future. She has not driven in 15 years. She chose to give up her driver’s license rather than risk the lives of others. Sometimes she is sad. Sometimes she is angry. Sometimes she questions why she has this horrifying disease, because there are others in the world who have never worked and never contributed. Her fondest wish is to have her eyesight restored so that she could go to the grocery store alone and work every single day for the rest of her life.
Sometimes I get tired. Or annoyed by having to run errands, go grocery shopping or car pool. Sometimes I think I want to never have to leave my house. Then I remember that while those things are chores, they are also a privilege. And I look at the doll my mother gave me on my 26th birthday, in its beautiful, white dress, in its glass case and I know that I can be as strong as I have to be, as strong as my mother has always been. "
He Said, She Said, They Said... And Nothing Gets Done **UPDATED**
I have debated for over a week about whether to mention this, just because I hate to even acknowledge the GOP's shyte, but, again, our country is at stake. Our future and the future of our future generations.
The Bush years were long, tortorous and illegal, but they are now in the past. Do I believe that W is solely responsible for the crap we find ourselves in now? No. One man can not cause this economic crisis, although he certainly did nothing to attempt to stop it. Housing bubble? Increasing debt? Immoral war? What? Dipshit.
The economy is cyclical. W pushed it in this direction, but it was already headed that way. President Obama is attempting to turn the Titanic. It does not happen quickly. It may not (has not) happen before there is some damage to the ship. BUT IT WILL TURN. Unless the Captain is shoved overboard and another monkey (or worse, a pitbull with lipstick) is given the wheel.
In a recent assignment for class one of the questions was to explain what I saw as the current threat(s) to democracy. While it took me an entire paragraph and an antidote about a friend who has a PhD in research psychology, my answer could have been written in one word. Stupid.
While I believe that George and Ben and James and Thomas and the others (aka The Founding Fathers) were amazing, intelligent men who created a masterpiece, I don't like having their thoughts thrown in my face, because they had no regard for me. Still, I think they did get one thing correct that they are never given credit for. They knew the average person was a moron. That is why they set up the system so that only those who were paying attention were allowed to vote.
Of course those were the same people who are members of the GOP today, so maybe that wasn't such a hot idea.
**UPDATED**
Boehner may compromise! Shhhh, don't tell or he will change his mind!

The News Is Overwhelming
One of the classes I took Term 2 (Oct - Dec) was State and Local Politics. It was a tough class, but I really enjoyed the way the instructor taught it. It has to be difficult to try to actually teach an online class, I think. So, we had weekly quizzes which guaranteed that we read the chapters. I learned quite a bit about the actual processes used in different states, about different state constitutions and that I need to start paying closer attention to what is happening locally, because there is probably more I can do there. One of the requirements of the class was to attend, and write a report on, a local meeting. I chose the Bay County Commission Meeting of 3 Nov. It was interesting. It was also held in the brand new Bay County Government Center, with almost no one there. Where did this money come from, I wonder? This room would have held several hundred people and it was NICE. Maybe I should run for county commissioner if I ever graduate? It is a part time job and pays more than I am making now.
The brand new library was right next door. I knew this was being built, because the old one had leaking walls and the books were being ruined. I didn't know it was going to as big as it is or as nice. It is a library. Why does it need huge glass windows? In hurricane country? I looked for a picture or link online, but couldn't find one. Shouldn't they be proud of this monstrosity?
My tax dollars are wasted every single place they are touched, not just on a federal level. Isn't that just great?

Free At Last!
I turned in my final last Thursday night. Grades were due in yesterday, so they should be posted on the Troy website. I do not even have the guts to look. I did have A's in both of my classes, but I am not sure that I did very well on either final exam, so I am scared to look. Maybe after Christmas.
DSD is still out of work. He is looking, but no one is hiring. He has an interview this afternoon. Another one. Apparently he is #1 on everyone's list, but no one has any money.
His daughter did bring a little happiness to our lives by making us grandparents at the end of September. Grandparents! Crazy. I have pictures, but they are at home and I am at work. She has brought us an entire new family, because her... well, we'll call him husband, is a widower with 2 daughters ages 10 & 13. The baby is precious (we saw them in Nashville in November) but he is, you know, kind of a blob. The girls have well-developed personalities! They know how to behave in social situations! They can speak (and write) English! Correctly! Spelling words! Correctly!
I know it is crazy to be so excited about the fact that my 13 year old grand daughter can spell but my 15 year old step son can not. And many, many, many of the people I am taking classes with are having a little difficulty. I don't many accidently putting in "to" for "too" I mean putting in "pitchers" for "pictures" and writing the way they would speak, instead of correctly. It makes me insane! Hmmm, so maybe I will still get A's because I can write using correct grammar?
How is everyone in BlogLand (I did see squeeze in time to take BabyBoy to see "ZombieLand" Incredibly stupid! I loved it)? I hope your lives are not as crazy and stressed out as mine is. So much happened since the start of Term 1 that I couldn't possibly get it all into one post. So I wanted to say Hi and I'm back temporarily and then maybe throw in some more posts between now and the time school starts back in January.
I really do have pictures: Lola, grandchildren, Nashville, Opryland, Florida Gators, Me, new & improved with short hair.
Soon, I promise!

Really Quick
Term 1 is completed. I managed 2 A's and 1 B. That World Politics class was TOUGH. I am really lucky I got a B, I think.
Into the 2nd week of Term 2. Working my butt off. I keep thinking I am going to have a stroke or something, but I keep getting up and going to work and going home, cooking dinner, studying and sleeping. Wow.
This weekend, I have 3 papers due on Sunday for ONE class (assignments in the other class are completed and turned in) and DSD and I are leaving in the morning for Starkville, MS to watch UF play @ Mississippi St. I figure I can write the papers (2 are started) on the way and type them on his laptop on the way home. I hope.
Keeping a close eye on the President. I want the rest of the TARP money to go toward healthcare. I don't think bailing out anyone else is a good idea, but I do like the idea of capping salaries for those businesses who have not paid the taxpayers back. Is that legal?
Why is Glenn Beck still allowed on the air? I have emailed and called sponsors. I have complained. How does anyone with a brain believe the lies on put out by the hate mongers? Sad state our country is in.
Trying to eat healthier, less processed food. It is more work to PLAN the meals, but not really to cook them. I spend a lot of time on FoodNetwork.com.
That isn't all, that isn't even CLOSE, but I have to shut down the computer and get out of here for a doctor's appointment. Maybe I will have a minute before the end of the month?

I Should Be Working on My Final Exam
DSD is out of town, playing golf. I know, I know, he is unemployed, but this has been paid for quite some time and he does go most years. I am actually enjoying the peace and quiet and the remote. I am experimenting with new foods and foods that DSD does not enjoy or (most likely) will not try. Saturday I made an avocado dip. Not bad. Sunday was broiled burgers smothered in Emeril's Creole Seasoning. Monday was homemade pizza. The sauce is the homemade part, I can't imagine ever making my own pizza dough. Today there is a pot roast in the slow cooker. My husband, bless him, does not like pot roast. Ok, he always loves it when I cook it, but he doesn't like the IDEA of it. Ever.
BabyBoy and I are going to see "Zombieland" tonight. Over the weekend I am going to take him to see "Capitalism - A Love Story."
Soon, I am going to HAVE to finish that paper. But not today.

Too Much To Do!
I don't know about you, but I am tired. And I am not sure I am ever going to get caught up.
Henry and the LittleMan are GONE. Safe and sound in California. LittleMan may be back for Christmas (who knows, his mother changes her story from minute to minute) but Henry should never, ever be back in the state of Florida. I am eternally grateful for that and Lola does not seem to be lonely as DSD said she would.
Claudette was a big fat nothing. I guess there were those who panicked over the impending doom that she was bringing, but, honestly, she cooled things off nicely and filled up the pool. I didn't notice a lot of thunder or lightning or even much more than a brisk breeze. I had to work yesterday, the storm was a bust.
I am back in school. On line classes at Troy University where I will eventually receive my Bachelor's Degree in Political Science. I am taking 7 credit hours, which didn't sound like much until it hit me that these classes are given in terms, not semesters. I will not be taking these 7 hours for 16 weeks, but for 9. NINE. Which pretty much means if I have a free minute, it is spent reading or writing something for class.
I am not abandoning this blog. I am not even really taking a break, at least not one I have control over. I will be around. I will post when I can. I will do my best to pop in on your blogs as often as possible. But it won't be as often as it has been. :-(
Until Christmas break, then I will have some free time.

A Little Power Hungry Maybe?
I understand that things are different today than they were when I graduated 24 years ago and a very large beach ball bounced over my head during the graduation ceremony. Certainly they are different than they were when my brother graduated 21 years ago and handed the principal a condom in exchange for his diploma. Schools are stricter now in some ways (and, sadly, not as strict in others), but some things should not be up to the school administration. The young man in this video was singled out for nothing more than being slightly exuberant.
Really? This is not acceptable. Something needs to be done about power hungry school administrators.
And just for the record, my son did not receive his diploma at the time he graduated. No one did. He received it a week later, but graduation was 2 weeks before school actually let out.
And when I graduated from the local community college on Mother's Day, I didn't receive my diploma for almost a month.

Crazy Bio Teacher Update
Or I am not blaming her much.
The problem is that she is a moron. Seriously.
She is the instructor. She is supposed to know what she is talking about and she should be able to pronounce the words for the body system she is teaching. She mispronounces simple words and I stop listening; hence, a C average.
But what biology instructor says CARDIATIC for CARDIAC? Or SYSTEMATIC for SYSTEMIC? URETHA instead of URETHRA? It makes me in-freaking-sane!
Last night's class was the absolute worst, though. Cancer, STDs and reproduction. Cancer was quick and painless, but I know a little something about STDs and reproduction myself. I have a 20 year old son, so I have done my best to keep informed about sexually transmitted diseases to ensure that I was giving him the best possible answers; the truthful answers. And I have personally reproduced, although that does not make me an expert. I am also quite fascinated by reproduction and I read a lot on the subject. If I ever win the lottery and can afford not to work, my plan is to start my own business as a doula. I was actually asked if I wanted a job at the local hospital when my bff had her second child, because I was the only one she would listen to and I could get her through the contractions without her coming unglued.
So when Ms. Crazy was explaining that herpes can pass through a condom I was dumbfounded. Although she was technically correct; she never explained that latex condoms are safe and that the virus can only pass through lambskin.
I almost lost my mind when she told the class that it is easy to get pregnant on the pink (or green) 'sugar' pills taken during the week of menstruation, because a woman is not receiving hormones and then she told us that a woman should NEVER go straight through the pills to prevent menstruation. She just sort of shuddered and said something about her college days and how horrible it was.
These are all lies. And while most of the class is grown, we have at least three 19 or 20 year old women in there. I turned around after the comment on getting pregnant during the sugar pills and told them it was lie. But what are the chances they believe me?
The facts are that the birth control pills are 99.9% effective when taken correctly. The BCPs prevent ovulation and, if by some freak accident, ovulation occurs and fertilization occurs, the pills prevent implantation. And there are new pills that a woman takes 365 days a year with no menstruation EVER.
But the absolute most horrible part of the class was when she informed the class that if a woman performs oral sex, the sperm will live in the mouth for up to 72 hours and can show up on a dental X-ray. I was not even sure if this was true or not! I specifically asked if Listerine would kill them and was told NO! After thinking about it this morning, I realize that she is absolutely full of crap. The enzymes and bacteria in my mouth would kill the sperm. I asked the MDs I work with if this was possible and was told even if I went in DIRECTLY after performing AND HADN'T BRUSHED MY TEETH sperm does not show up on X-rays.
My plan was to email her department head after next week's final and complain about the mispronunciations, but I think I have to email him or her today. After sitting through a class on something I actually knew about and receiving incorrect information, I am wondering how much other incorrect information I have received this semester? And I am worried that others in the class are spreading the false information around.

My Biology Class is on Monday night
I have to give the instructor credit, I probably would not have handled everything with the grace she did. According to her she had received several emails from various students asking about breaks on nights when we would be there late. (Class times are from 6:30-9:15) She explained that because she was sick last class and we left early, we would have to stay for the duration of class time and she would be giving us a break at 8:00 on the nights we would be there the entire time. We had a break at exactly 8 and we were released about 9:10. She also said that if we were not going to stay after 8, there would be no breaks. That's fine, but by 8, I have to GO, so I hope she doesn't think she is going to get an extra 5 or 10 minutes out of me.
She is a really great instructor. When DSD was teaching (in the Navy) during review time, he would kick the podium when he meant "This WILL be on the test," she just says, "This WILL be on the test." But the most important thing is that she isn't putting me to sleep. I think I may actually have a slight understanding of enzymes right this minute and that wasn't something I could say yesterday. :-)
